Picture Perfect Prague

Czech Republic, Europe, Prague, Travel

One late afternoon I strolled along the famous Charles Bridge and looked out into the sunset that was illuminating the beautiful, pastel coloured buildings along the Vltava River. I looked to my right and saw the impressive Prague Castle glistening on top of the hill. A busker played a melody of whistful tunes on his violin and in this moment I cannot believe that I am actually here in the hopelessly romantic Prague. This is the city that completely stole my heart. There were so many moments wandering the cobblestone streets of Prague where I had the urge to pinch myself. Everywhere you look there is another grand and uniquely decorated building to marvel at. I will definitely be back in this city in the future! Here is my three day guide to the magnificent Prague.

Day One

Appreciate the creative architecture of The Dancing House

Taking a morning walk along the Vltava River you will come across the unusual architectural structure of The Dancing House, also known as Fred and Ginger.

Book a show at Prague National Theatre

Make sure you pay a visit to The National Theatre to see one of the many shows on offer. Alternatively, there are many other theatres scattered throughout Prague that put on some amazing classical music concerts and ballets. On my first night in Prague I saw the ballet Swan Lake at the Divaldo Hybernia

Stroll along Charles Bridge

My favourite place in Prague! I walked back and forth along this bridge many times, snapping photos of the spectacular scenery and watching the amazed faces of all the people walking by. The best time for a slow stroll along the bridge is during sunrise or sunset when there are less people but it is beautiful and worth it anytime of the day.

Marvel at the impressive library at Strahov Monastery

Boasting incredible views of the city the Strahov Monastery is also home to one of the most beautiful libraries.

Wander around the grounds of Prague Castle

There are many museums, churches and exhibitions in the Prague Castle complex. You can buy a ticket at the entrance which allows you to see all or some of what is on offer, depending on your interests. For history buffs it is a great place to spend the entire afternoon.

Be amazed by St. Vitus Cathedral

Absolutely stunning! I found the interior less impressive but the exterior left me speechless. Make sure you climb the tower for the best views of Prague. I think it is necessary to see a city from above to really appreciate it.

Visit the exhibitions and cute, little boutiques along The Golden Lane

I loved walking through the small Golden Lane. Be entertained by the Knights and Weapons exhibit where they also display some cringe worthy medieval torture devices. There are also some cute shops that sell handmade, wooden puppets.

Try some delicious and creative Kürtőskalács (aka Chimney Cakes)

I am obsessed with this yummy treat, originally from Hungary. There are plenty of shops that sell these Chimney Cakes but my favourite was at Good Food Coffee and Bakery. As you come to the end of Charles Bridge and make your way up the street to The Old Town Square you will find this lively and busy bakery. My favourite was their Chimney Strudel with baked apples, spices and whipped cream as a filling! You can also get them with Nutella in the middle. I did come here more than once. It was hard not to.

Listen to some wonderful classical music one evening at one of the many churches around Prague.

There are many classical music concerts on offer every night in practically all of the churches around Prague but I recommend seeing one at St. Clement Cathedral along Karlova. Their acoustics are one of the best. No need to book in advance, just go to the stands in front of the church during the day and buy your ticket for the night.

Day Two

Walk around the Old Town Sqaure

Second to Charles Bridge, this is one of my other favourite hangouts. You have a view of the famous Astronomical Clock and the beautiful towers of the Church of Our Lady. There are alleyways of shops, restaurants and cafes to catch your eye. All the colourful buildings will make you want to take a thousand photos of this place, I know I did.

Take in the short show of the Prague Astronomical Clock

In my opinion the little show of the moving apostles is really overrated but it is more amusing to watch the amazed reactions of the crowd. Swing by for the hourly show. The design of the clock itself is really beautiful.

Get lost in Josefov

This part of town is known as the Jewish Quarter. You can spend hours wandering the streets, ogling at the boutiques and the impressive design of the surrounding apartments. There are many historical monuments to visit in Josefov such as The Jewish Cemetery, The Old-New Synagogue and the amazing Spanish Synagogue

Satisfy your cravings at Lehká Hlava

The best vegetarian restaurant I have ever had the pleasure of eating in. There is another one just off Old Town Sqaure called Maitrea that comes in at a very close second. They each have a very similar menu. I recommend the goats cheese, eggplant and hummus burger with a side of guacamole and tortilla chips. For a drink, try one of their many freshly squeezed juices.

Visit Vysehrad Castle

…because it is a castle and you can never visit too many castles.

Day Three (Day Trips)

Terezin Concentration Camp

Out of the three day trips mentioned below I chose to go and visit the Terezin Concentration Camp. Thousand and thousands of Jewish men, women and children passed through these walls before being transported to the extermination camps of Treblinka and Auschwitz. I booked a guided tour through Viator which includes transport from Prague to Terezin.

Czesky Krumlov

What is said to be the most charming, small town in Bohemia. This gives me another reason to come back to the Czech Republic. It is high on my list of places to visit.

Kutna Hora

The main attraction of Kutna Hora is the Sedlec Ossuary which contains tens of thousands of human bones that decorate the walls, ceilings and monuments within this chapel.
